«Rebeldes» es una de las primeras novelas que en los tiempos actuales trata sin tapujos la cuestión de la delincuencia juvenil. Escrita cuando la autora contaba tan sólo dieciséis años y llevada al cine por Francis Ford Coppola, relata la aventura en que se ven envueltos un par de adolescentes de los suburbios de Nueva York a causa de la enemistad entre bandas.
A raíz de una pelea cuyos motivos haría que detectar en las diferencias sociales y económicas, Ponyboy y Johnny tienen que huir sin ser verdaderamente culpables.
Este libro llegó a mis manos de improviso, de hecho, me lo recomendaron y, al ser cortito, no parecía nada denso y al hablar sobre delincuencia juvenil, me dije: «¿por qué no intercalar este libro entre los que tenía en mente? Solo son 192 páginas». Lo hice y, hasta hoy no me arrepiento porque podría decir que se ha convertido en uno de mis favoritos. Hicieron una película basada en este libro en el ’96 donde escenificaban cada momento del libro, además de encontrarme con que Tom Cruise estaba entre los actores, recordé lo joven que era y pude ver desde dónde empezó y me ha hecho incluso sentirme un poco más ligada a la historia de cierta manera.
En el libro se diferencia a las bandas. Los «socs» son los niños ricos y con dinero que llevan ropa cara y conducen buenos coches. Los «greasers» son chicos de cabello largo que siempre se meten en problemas, son pobres, gamberros y les encanta meterse en peleas. No hay termino medio, al menos, no en esta historia. El joven de 14 años Ponyboy nos abre las puertas de lo que ocurrió en cierto momento de su vida a través del papel, la cual, más adelante, se termina convirtiendo en una redacción para el colegio, la que llevaba tanto tiempo retrasando. Sodapop es el hermano mediano con el que Ponyboy se lleva tan bien y Darry el hermano mayor de ambos, el que trabaja horas y horas para que los tres puedan comer y permitirse tener un techo. El chico nos presenta también al resto de chicos de la banda y algunas chicas socs que conocieron en un cine, la autora te mete tanto en la historia que te ves envuelta en su mundo y ambiente, raramente te permites escapar.
La historia es bastante dura. De hecho, la historia de cada uno de ellos lo es. Algunos de esos chicos son maltratados en sus casas y se pasan noches frías durmiendo en la calle, como Johnny, uno de los personajes que más me ha atraído. Te cuenta cómo han sentido las peleas, los problemas familiares, cómo de unidos se sienten entre ellos y cómo se ayudan cuando se necesitan. Son jóvenes, muy jóvenes, pero llevan navajas para defenderse, tienen que hacerlo si no quieren morir ahogados en una fuente a manos de un «soc», cuando lo único que quieren es irse a un lugar donde no sean diferenciados por «socs» o por «greasers». La muerte de un chico a manos de Johnny hace que toda la historia vaya teniendo una trayectoria y un ritmo más intenso y singular, cómo Ponyboy se escapa con él para apoyarle y no dejarle solo muestra esa lealtad que no muchos poseen. Dallas, uno de sus colegas más cercanos y leales, tampoco les deja tirados, les da una pistola, comida y una de sus reflexiones de chaval que ha estado en la cárcel varias veces.
Susan E. Hinton nos muestra a Darry como un chico que ha hecho el papel de padre y madre a la vez con sus hermanos, es el protector, el que les suelta la bronca cuando se saltan los horarios o no hacen lo que les ha dicho. Nunca muestra sus sentimientos y menos hacia Ponyboy, lo cual, hace que se sienta inferior y crea que su hermano mayor no le quiere. Verse en el hospital, después de una explosión en la iglesia (que no voy a contar porque fastidiaría el libro), vemos a ese Darry realmente preocupado, mostrando lo que realmente siente por su hermano y no es nada de lo que Ponyboy se imaginaba, vemos a alguien que no quiere perder a nadie más y está aterrado con solo pensarlo. Y esto es algo buenísimo de este libro y es que puedes ver las entrañas de cada personaje, desde los momentos donde se hace el fuerte hasta donde se ve realmente vulnerable y tal cual es.
Creo que muestra realidades muy crudas, intensas y que puede que no mucha gente comente. La delincuencia juvenil se suele dar en zonas donde hay pobreza y una gran rivalidad entre bandas, es algo aprendido y que llevan generaciones pasando, viven esa vida sin tener más opciones, sin saber si quiera si hay salidas, tan solo saben dónde dormirán esta noche y si será sobre una cama o sobre el suelo. Me ha hecho llorar, en muchas ocasiones, sobre todo, porque la autora tiene esa capacidad de meterse dentro de ti al mostrarte una situación que se ve simple, pero también difícil y angustiosa, te invita a empatizar con ellos, con lo que sufren cada día y nos deja ver que el estar unidos es el único medio que tienen para sobrevivir.

Sodapop is the middle brother that Ponyboy gets along with so well and Darry the older brother of both, the one who works hours and hours so that the three of them can eat and afford to have a roof. The boy also introduces us to the rest of the boys in the band and some «socs» girls they met in a cinema, the author gets you so into the story that you are involved in their world and environment, you rarely allow yourself to escape from it.
The story is pretty tough. In fact, the story of each of them is. Some of those guys are mistreated in their homes and spend cold nights sleeping on the street, like Johnny, one of the characters that has attracted me the most. The author tells you how they have felt the fights, the family problems, how close they feel to each other and how they help each other when they are needed. They are young, very young, but they carry knives to defend themselves, they have to do it if they do not want to drown in a fountain at the hands of a «soc», when all they want is to go to a place where they are not differentiated by «socs» or by «greasers». The death of a boy at the hands of Johnny makes the whole story have a trajectory and a more intense and unique rhythm, how Ponyboy escapes with him to support him and not leave him alone shows that loyalty that not many possess. Dallas, one of his closest and most loyal friends they have, also does not leave them lying down, he gives them a gun, food and one of his reflections as a someone who has been in jail several times.
Susan E. Hinton shows us Darry as a boy who has played the role of father and mother at the same time with his brothers, is the protector, the one who releases the anger when they skip the schedules or do not do what he has told them. He never shows his feelings and less towards Ponyboy, which makes him feel inferior and believe that his older brother does not love him. Seeing himself in the hospital, after an explosion in the church (which I will not tell you because I would discover the main story in the book), we see that really worried Darry, showing how he really feels about his brother and it’s nothing Ponyboy imagined, we see someone who doesn’t want to lose anyone else and is terrified just thinking about it. And this is a great thing about this book, you can see the bowels of each character, from the moments where they pretend to be strong to where they look really vulnerable and as they are.
I think it shows a very raw, intense realities that may not be many people commenting on. Juvenile delinquency usually occurs in areas where there is poverty and a great rivalry between gangs, it is something learned and that they have been going through for generations, they live that life without having more options, without even knowing if they have a way out, they only know where they will sleep tonight and if it will be on a bed or on the floor. It has made me cry, on many occasions, especially because the author has that ability to get inside you by showing you a situation that looks simple, but also difficult and distressing, invites you to empathize with them, with what they suffer every day and lets us see that being united is the only way they have to survive.
I left on the spanish version the trailer of the film, it is very old but it happens exactly the same as in the book (it is in English, I have not been able to get it in Spanish or subtitled). I hope you decide to read it, finally 🙂
