Este libro fue un regalo de cumpleaños que aprecié mucho, quería un libro en inglés y el deseo se me concedió. Lo que primero captó mi atención fue el título del libro, creo que ya de por sí me pareció atrayente, cuando leí la contraportada fue un sí rotundo. Desde el primer momento, te comenta claramente lo que va a ocurrir en el libro y puedes intuir incluso, el contexto de la historia. Aún así, lo cogí y esperé a poder leerlo, he de decir que no me decepcionó en absoluto, es un libro que lo leería por segunda vez, muy entretenido, claro de leer, sencillo de seguir y muy directo.
Karen Dionne se centra en la historia de Rachel, la cual está en un psiquiátrico donde ella misma se internó al creer que había sido ella quién había matado a sus padres cuando era pequeña. No solo me han gustado estas partes, sino donde habla también de la perspectiva de cómo lo vivió su madre durante esos años cuando sus dos hijas eran pequeñas. Su madre nos introduce a Diana, la hija mayor y todos los problemas que trajo consigo, su diagnóstico psicológico y por qué actúa de cierta manera. Esto se desvela bastante pronto, no nos deja espacio a la intriga ni a la posible duda de qué puede estar pasando, la autora simplemente, quiere que lo sepamos. Me han gustado mucho esos toques despiadados de la hija, los comportamientos psicopáticos, la desesperación de la madre, la cual, está no solo escrita con sus palabras sino que también se denota durante la trayectoria de todo el libro hasta que esta muere. Más tarde, nos introduce a la dulce y obediente Rachel, la hija pequeña, la cual, empieza a ser maltratada por su hermana.
La interacción entre los personajes es muy limpia, clara y creo que la autora les ha dado una personalidad única, de hecho, no suele ser fácil hablar de un carácter psicopático de la forma tan sencilla como lo ha descrito ella. Han habido puntos en el libro donde me he sorprendido mucho, me he levantado de la silla y me he llevado la mano a la boca, sobre todo, en las escenas de acción. Me hubiera gustado conocer un poco más al personaje de Charlotte, al que nos muestra Karen Dionne como la fiel seguidora de Diana, sabemos que es su tía, que la consiente y hace lo que le pide en su edad adulta, totalmente controlada y manipulada por ella pero apenas conocemos sus emociones en referencia a esto o cómo va evolucionando la relación con ella, solo me habría gustado conocer un poco más sobre ello.
Me ha parecido interesante uno de los momentos donde Rachel decide volver a su casa familiar y sabe que Charlotte y Diana están ahí, cómo se esconde y por qué cree que es mejor no aparecer. Está claro que su hermana es una psicópata y que su tía le sigue la corriente, pero me hubiera gustado más potenciar la vuelta de Rachel a lo grande, dado que, ha sido un personaje al que han engañado y han tratado de dejar olvidado, no han visitado o enviado cartas, creo que la hubiera hecho entrar por la entrada principal, pero bueno, también entiendo el miedo experimentado al volver y ver a su hermana, la cual, sabe de antemano que es capaz de todo. De todas formas, el contexto es muy bueno, no te pierdes en ninguna parte de la historia, la escritora lo va contando todo en dosis no muy pequeñas durante el libro y te deja conocer incluso, a personajes secundarios.
Vamos viendo cómo Diana se va volviendo cada vez más despiadada y le va gustando más matar, me ha encantado la evolución que tiene de niña a adulta, sobre todo, el saber cómo su madre intenta hacer todo lo posible para que no haga daño a nadie más, los toques de un padre desesperado que solo quiere que no se creen dramas con lo que ocurre, apartados de la ciudad para que dejaran de mirarles y verse inmersos en una historia que no se hubieran imaginado. No es un libro que te engancha pero te invita a seguir leyéndolo, no resulta pesado y no tiene descripciones densas, creo que la autora comenta todo lo que necesita comentar de una manera entretenida, pausada, bien tratada y causando interés en el lector.
Recomendaría este libro en un 80%, creo que es muy interesante, lo único que añadiría es que tiende a ser bastante obvio, sabes lo que va a pasar y quién mató a sus padres antes de que la autora lo cuente, me hubiera gustado tener un poco más de intriga y juego con ello. Pero entre todo, me ha encantado.

This book was a birthday present that I appreciated very much, I wanted a book in English and the wish was granted. What first caught my attention was the title of the book, I think I already found it appealing, when I read the back cover it was a rotund «yes». From the first moment, it tells you clearly what is going to happen in the book and you can even sense the context of the story. Even so, I picked it up and waited to read it, I have to say that I was not disappointed at all, it is a book that I would read for the second time, it’s very entertaining, clear to read, simple to follow and very direct.
Karen Dionne focuses on the story of Rachel, who is in a psychiatric hospital where she herself was admitted believing that she had been the one who had killed her parents when she was little. Not only did I like these parts, but where she also talks about is the perspective of how his mother lived it during those years when her two daughters were small. Her mother introduces us to Diana, the oldest daughter and all the problems she brought with her, her psychological diagnosis and why she acts in a certain way. This is revealed quite soon, it leaves us no room for intrigue or possible doubt about what may be happening, the author simply wants us to know. I really liked those ruthless touches of the daughter, the psychopathic behaviors, the desperation of the mother, which is not only written with her words but also denoted during the trajectory of the whole book until she dies. Later, he introduces us to the sweet and obedient Rachel, the young daughter, who begins to be abused by her sister.
The interaction between the characters is very clean, clear and I think the author has given them a unique personality, in fact, it is not usually easy to talk about a psychopathic character in the simple way as she has described it. There have been points in the book where I have been very surprised, I have gotten up from the chair and I have put my hand on my mouth, especially in the action scenes. I would have liked to know a little more about the character of Charlotte, who shows us Karen Dionne as Diana’s faithful follower, we know that she is her aunt, who consents to her everything she wants and does what she asks in her adulthood, totally controlled and manipulated by her but we hardly know her emotions in reference to this or how the relationship with her evolves, I would like to know a little more about it.
I found interesting one of the moments where Rachel decides to return to her family home and knows that Charlotte and Diana are there, how she hides and why she thinks it is better not to appear. It is clear that her sister is a psychopath and that her aunt goes with the flow, but I would have liked more to promote Rachel’s return in a big way, given that she has been a character who has been deceived and left behind, in fact, they have not visited or sent letters to Rachel, I would’ve made the character came in through the main door, but well, I also understand the fear she experienced just thinking what her sister could do to her because she knew Diana was capable of everything. Anyway, the context is very good, you don’t get lost anywhere in the story, the writer tells everything in not very small doses during the book and lets you meet even the secondary characters which are really interesting too.
We are seeing how Diana is becoming more and more ruthless and likes to kill more, I loved the evolution she has from child to adult, above all, knowing how her mother tries to do everything possible so that she does not hurt anyone else, the touches of a desperate father who only wants not to create dramas with what happens, being away from the city so that the neighbours would stop looking at them and be immersed in a story they would not have imagined. It is not a book that hooks you but invites you to continue reading it, it is not heavy and does not have dense descriptions, I think the author comments everything she needs to comment in an entertaining way, slow, well treated and causing interest in the reader.
I would recommend this book by 80%, I think it’s very interesting, the only thing I would add is that it tends to be pretty obvious, you know what’s going to happen and who killed their parents before the author tells it, I wish I had a little more intrigue and play with it. But among everything, I loved it.
