Jamie Conklin, el único hijo de una madre soltera, solo quiere tener una infancia normal. Sin embargo, nació con una habilidad sobrenatural que su madre le insta a mantener en secreto y que le permite ver aquello que nadie puede y enterarse de lo que el resto del mundo ignora. Cuando una inspectora del Departamento de Policía de Nueva York le obliga a evitar el último atentado de un asesino que amenaza con seguir atacando incluso desde la tumba, Jamie no tardará en descubrir que el precio que debe pagar por su poder tal vez es demasiado alto.
«Después» es Stephen King en estado puro, una novela perturbadora y emotiva sobre la inocencia perdida y las pruebas que hay que superar para diferenciar el bien del mal.
Este era uno de los libros pendientes que tenía de Stephen King durante todo el 2022, literalmente. Así que, decidí empezarlo a mediados de diciembre tratando de terminarlo para el challenge literario pero no pudo ser. Así que, ha pasado a ser el primer libro leído del 2023 y he de decir que me ha sorprendido bastante, tiene muchos detalles y combina varios temas en un mismo libro. En ningún momento sabes dónde te va a deparar la historia, la narración de Jamie te empieza a cautivar de formas que no esperas y, en general, atrae más de lo que cualquiera podría esperar.
Uno de los argumentos importantes que Stephen King mantiene en todo el libro, es la capacidad de Jamie para ver fantasmas. La forma tan natural como lo va describiendo es cautivadora, incluso, inocente y desinteresada. Es uno de los focos en los que la historia va formándose. Cómo lo vive el personaje cuando tiene nueve años y cómo va acostumbrándose cada vez más conforme va haciéndose mayor, incluso, puedes notarlo en su forma de relatar los hechos, notas cómo va madurando, al igual que su historia. Lo combina muy bien con la aparición del llamado «fuego fatuo» que no sabemos si es un demonio o solo una aparición de algún tipo, que lo que hace es poseer a fantasmas. Es una aproximación muy interesante, a mí desde luego ni se me hubiera ocurrido. El autor lo mantiene en secreto durante todo el libro, además ni lo resuelve al final, lo cual, lo hace todavía más atractivo, lo deja al pensamiento libre. Y todo esto, combinado con la corrupta agente de Policía que es adicta a las drogas tras tantos años transportándolas. Combinar estas tres cosas no es fácil, aún así, él lo ha hecho una vez más.
Los personajes que aparecen como fantasmas son realmente interesantes, desde el escritor, hasta el tipo que activa bombas en edificios. Mientras vas leyendo, no tienes ni idea de dónde quiere ir a parar con estas historias, lo cual, te empuja a querer leer mucho más. La madre de Jamie es un personaje muy importante y bastante protector, muestra muy bien esa parte maternal en la que se trata de preservar la inocencia de un niño, en este caso Jamie, sabiendo que lo que le cuenta es cierto, haciendo que la relación entre ellos sea más cercana. Al haber sido madre soltera y solo tenerse el uno al otro, te da esa sensación de pertenencia, de que ambos son capaces de cuidarse el uno al otro y que no quieren que nada les pase. En cuanto al innombrable «fuego fatuo» me ha parecido un demonio todo el tiempo, sobre todo cuando Jamie trata de combatir contra él para que salga del cuerpo del fantasma que posee. Es bastante curioso porque siempre he leído sobre demonios que poseen personas pero no a fantasmas, no sé si alguien más ha llegado a escribir sobre esto pero me ha parecido de lo más interesante e inédito. Todo el tema de tratar de combatir el mal y saber que hay que equilibrarlo con el bien, ha sido una de las cosas que me han encantado, ha sido como un hechizo, pero sin serlo. Y bueno, ni qué hablar de la última muerte que presencia Jamie, la última confesión que me dejó sorprendida del todo.
Tiene un muy buen contexto donde todo va sucediendo a un ritmo bastante bueno, no te pierdes y no es para nada denso, ha sido un libro para mí, fácil de leer además de corto, tiene 244 páginas. Tiene su intriga y sus partes de acción, donde el autor no ha tenido ninguna prisa en llevarte a través de las situaciones. El tema de la Policía corrupta, me ha parecido un buen tema que añadir, al principio piensas que no va a formar parte de la historia pero, sigue apareciendo y de la peor manera. Tiene sus partes un poco macabras, pero para nada da miedo, al menos, a mí no, me ha entretenido mucho más que otra cosa. Me ha gustado mucho leerlo. Lo recomiendo al 100%.

This was one of the pending Stephen King books I had for all of 2022, literally. So, I decided to start it in the middle of December trying to finish it for the literary challenge but it couldn’t be. So, it has become the first book read in 2023 and I have to say that it has surprised me a lot, it has many details and combines several topics in the same book. At no point do you know where the story is going to take you, Jamie’s storytelling begins to captivate you in ways you don’t expect and overall pulls in more than anyone might expect.
One of the important topics that Stephen King maintains throughout the book is Jamie’s ability to see ghosts. The natural way in which he describes it is captivating, even innocent and disinterested. It is one of the focal points in which the story is forming. How he’s nine and experience things in not so mature way and how he gets more and more used to it as he gets older, you can even notice it in his way of recounting the events, you notice how he is maturing, just like his story. It combines very well with the appearance of the so-called «ignis fatuus» that we don’t know if it is a demon or just an apparition of some kind, that what it does is possess ghosts. It is a very interesting approximation, of course it wouldn’t come to my mind write about this. The author keeps it a secret throughout the book, besides, he doesn’t even resolve it at the end, which makes it even more attractive, so the reader can believe what he/she wants. And all this, combined with the corrupt police officer who is addicted to drugs after so many years transporting them. Combining these three things is not easy, yet he has done it once again.
The characters that appear as ghosts are really interesting, from the writer, to the guy who sets off bombs in buildings. As you read, you have no idea where he wants to go with these stories, which pushes you to want to read much more. Jamie’s mother is a very important character and quite protective, she shows very well that maternal part in which she tries to preserve the innocence of a child, in this case Jamie, knowing that what he tells her about ghosts is true, making the relationship between them closer. Being a single parent and only having each other, it gives you that feeling of belonging, that they both are capable of taking care of each other and that they don’t want anything to happen to them. As for the nameless «ignis fatuus» it seemed like a demon to me all the time, especially when Jamie tries to fight it to get out of the body of the ghost it possesses. It is quite curious because I have always read about demons that possess people but not ghosts, I don’t know if someone else has come to write about this but I found it really interesting and unprecedented. The whole issue of trying to combat evil and knowing that you have to balance it with good, has been one of the things that I have loved, it has been like a spell, but without being one. And well, not to mention the last death that Jamie witnesses, the last confession that left me completely surprised.
It has a very good context where everything is happening at a fairly good pace, you don’t get lost and it is not dense at all, it has been a book for me, easy to read as well as short, it has 244 pages. It has its intrigue and its action parts, where the author has not been in any hurry to take you through the situations. The issue of the corrupt Police officer, I thought it was a good topic to add, at first you think that it will not be part of the story but it keeps appearing and in the worst way. It has its bit macabre parts, but it’s not scary at all, at least, not for me, it was entertaining much more than anything else. I really liked reading it. I recommend it 100%.
