«Voy a hacerla desaparecer.
Taking risks:
I opened my eyes suddenly, cowed. The place I was in was dark, except for an old, small, undesigned lamp at the end of it. I could only hear my breathing. I could feel the beads of sweat dripping down my forehead, I couldn’t move, my hands were tied behind my back, I felt the cold, thick wall stuck to my back. I couldn’t move my legs either, they were tied at the ankles. Shit. I was trying to differentiate something around me, but there was no way to do it, so I tried to put my knees on the floor to propel myself up and stand up. It took me a couple of crashes, but I managed to do it. Anyway, I couldn’t walk, I leaned against the wall again, trying to catch my breath, my heart was beating very fast.
I heard a sigh on the other side, soft but perceptible. Was anyone else there? I was scared, it could be anyone. It could be who had tied me up. I tried to breathe in a more rhythmic way, trying to make as little noise as possible, to pretend I wasn’t there, as if the other person had no company. Suddenly, I heard a door burst open, giving a dull thud, even, the other person who was there emitted a retained scream, barely existent, it could be perceived. One voice. It was stately, imposing, impressive with its volume, and had arrogant overtones. His words and laughter filled the room for a few moments, deciding that the lights that resided on the ceiling where we were were going to be turned on. I swallowed hard as soon as I saw who the other person was, the one who was tied to a chair with wrists and ankles, who was stirring when she looked at me, when she saw me pressed against the wall, just as surprised as she was. It was my Writing. It couldn’t be her. But, what on the hell…?
I realized that there was no one else in the room, nothing else that could be used, just the distance between us, knowing that we couldn’t do much to help each other, to untie each other. It would be too easy. But where was the other voice? It echoed through the walls, but it didn’t appear. Her shrill laugh made me shudder, but my eyes found only hers. I knew those eyes more than anything in the world, I wasn’t just scared, I was more than worried. I understood that invisible entity that was trying to plunge us into despair, I sensed what was happening, by the way in which it tried to untie itself, with frustration, with a broken impetus.
«You know what’s going on, right?» I asked, increasing the volume of my voice, it was as if that entity was trying to prevent us from communicating. She just stared back at me, in depth. «Tell me.»
«We can’t talk here, or he’ll know,» she said in a choked voice, on the verge of panic, I’ve never seen her so restless.
«You know who he is…» She nodded her head, carefully, with her eyes still open due to the shock, knowing more about what was happening than me, used to being in control of situations. «We can make him…»
I stopped in my tracks as soon as I saw a shadow getting bigger and bigger, which moved fast around the Writing, made her copper hair move and her eyes close tightly, I was terribly afraid of it. It formed into a more solid form around her neck and began to choke her. I felt his laughter through the black smoke that grew bigger and more annoying, along with a sound that made me fall to my knees on the floor, trying to avoid it without being able to cover my ears with both hands. They started bleeding, until suddenly, silence returned. The smoke disappeared again, it released the Writing for a moment, but I knew it would come back at any moment, it seemed like torture. For what?
I got up again, leaning against the back wall. I looked at her, she was exhausted, trying to take a deep breath. He knew very well what was going on, but he wasn’t going to tell me. I’d have to find out for myself, it wouldn’t take long for him to turn against me. The Writing didn’t stop coughing, I began to differentiate tears contained in her eyes. I swallowed as soon as I heard his voice again, this time his words sounded flatter, more direct, understandable, with no background noise. «I’m going to take away everything you ever had and I’m going to leave you with nothing, at last.» I swallowed. Revenge, what a surprise. But it sounded familiar, I was sure. It had been a long time since I had dealt with him, he was someone who was very difficult to deal with, with a temper that should not be pushed too much and an intoxicating darkness. As I thought about this, I saw the Writing being pushed to the other wall, breaking the chair into pieces and knocking her unconscious. I wriled in my rage. That he touched me, I could give him a pass but to her… Never.
«Okay, that’s enough! What do you want?» I shouted into the air of the room. A sinister laugh enveloped me, something that sent an unpleasant shiver down my spine.
«What do I want?! Seriously?» That laughter again, I couldn’t help but close my eyes to calm myself. «You took my house, it was all I had, you built on top of it as if I didn’t exist. I think taking away everything you have for now is more than enough to pay off your debt.»
The Library. Yeah, it’s true, I had built on top of it. This deity had remained before I organized my mind, a disorganized, stubborn, poor, obscure, undynamic, selfish, intolerant deity, everything that one might consider broken. I had to lock it up before I created, before I was, before I wrote my books, before I formed words, I had to make it disappear so that I wouldn’t see it, so that it wouldn’t exist. It was unfair, but necessary. It became a shadow, forced to stay in one of the most compact and airtight vents in the entire Library, to keep my story and characters safe. Like I said, unfair but necessary.
If he put something between his eyebrows he fulfilled it, he was a vengeful being, he could turn his humanity on and off at will and he could change shape. Black smoke, being incorporeal, call it what you will, but he was going to break me in two after seeing myself suffer. There were no possible techniques to solve that and I wasn’t going to call anyone to save the day, not for lack of interest or hope, but because he himself had to see that I didn’t do anything. that I didn’t fight his way out of the immune system, I knew what I had done and if I had to die, I would die. Because I would do it for her right then and there. I would stand in front of him and let him do as he pleased with me, as long as she was alive. I couldn’t go back knowing what her lips tasted like, seeing her pretty smile, having caressed her pale complexion and enjoyed her body more than once. The Writing woke up, confused and we looked at each other for a moment, somehow knowing what was going to happen. «I’m going to make it disappear. It will be as if it never existed, you will wither, you will be eating yourself away inside, you will not be able to communicate or express, you will not be able to love, you will not be able to be who you are, you will not have a family, you will wander aimlessly.»
This dark deity reappeared and grabbed the Writing from behind, she tried to get away but he was too strong, surrounding her. I thought for a few moments, tried to distance myself from the situation, from the cries of the Writing, from the piercing sounds of the walls, I tried to understand. A smile appeared on my face suddenly, a smile that the Writing deduced, ceasing to scream. I knew I’d figure out how to fix it, it was a silly puzzle. And it was stupid, very stupid. It was a revenge that wasn’t going to go well, He had to lose from the first moment. So, once I sorted out the words in my mind, I straightened up and spoke directly to that blackened smoke.
«You can kill her, kidnap her, do whatever you want. You can do it now. But she’ll come back, because you can kill a habit, you can kill motivation, you can cut my wings as much as you want, but you’re never, never, never, going to kill the love I have for her, for creating, for building, for melting into what I believe in, it’s impossible. As the words begin to flow, she will feel inside me again and this whole story will be a passing nightmare, a nonsense to talk about and laugh about in a few years.» And, understanding the situation even more, I closed my eyes and focused for a moment, causing the ropes that held me prisoner to come untached, Leaving my hands and legs free, I could move. «So, help yourself, darling. I have things to do.»
With a fuss he approached my position pushing me hard against the back wall, feeling a sharp, cold knife in my throat. A hand began to form that held it, then an arm, and then the rest of his body. I was stared at a dark, omnipresent, deep eyes, with a half-smile, bald and a black cloak that covered his strong body. I didn’t even move, I kept watching him. He had made another mistake, letting his rage turn him into a corporeal being who could be hurt. Writing creates, words create, humor creates, everything can be manifested when it is written, touched, expressed, communicated, but I wasn’t going to be the one to do it.
A dagger pierced his back. The Writing could only wish it, it only had to whisper it to make something appear with which we could save the day. It melted into smoke and we left that gloomy, dark room. With a snap of my fingers I made it disappear. It’s amazing how much we can do when we put our minds to it, when we believe in what we do, when we know that nothing can hurt us, overcome what we love so much, what we are capable of doing when we push ourselves to do it without hearing the background noise, when we let other sounds go, ideas, limitations and clumsiness cloud our path. We always knew how to get out, the door was open but we didn’t know our worth to do it at the right time.
