«The Haunting of Hill House» es una serie de televisión estadounidense de terror sobrenatural creada y dirigida por Mike Flanagan, producida por «Amblin Television» y «Paramount Television» para Netflix y sirve como la primera entrada en la serie de antología «The Haunting». Se basa libremente en la novela del mismo nombre de 1959 de Shirley Jackson. La trama alterna entre dos líneas de tiempo, después de cinco hermanos adultos cuyas experiencias paranormales en Hill House continúan persiguiéndolos en la actualidad.
Estaba un poco indecisa por ver esta serie porque sabía que tenía que ver con fantasmas, algo de terror, suspense y habría algún susto que otro, cosa que comprobé más tarde. Siempre he evitado las películas de miedo, desde pequeña que he evadido verlas y las he puesto en el grupo de «no me gustan» pero decidí no quería que circunstancias de mi pasado limitaran mi presente, como estaba ocurriendo con todo lo que tuviera que ver con el terror o el miedo, así que, decidí empezar por esta serie. Se podría decir que es suave en algunas cosas pero los sustos no te los quita nadie, a veces, salen cosas que no te esperas y, obviamente, te sobresaltas. ¿Me ha dado miedo? En ciertas ocasiones sí, pero preferí centrarme mucho más en la historia que desentrañaba la historia de estos chicos desde pequeños hasta la adultez.
Primeramente, nos encontramos con Steven Crain (hermano mayor), el joven escritor que habla sobre historias sobrenaturales de otras personas porque él es un cínico en cuanto a este tema, aunque iremos viendo que esto va cambiando conforme la serie avanza. Después tenemos a la otra hermana mayor Shirley Crain, la cual, trabaja en una funeraria con su marido y tiene dos hijos, ha tenido muchas experiencias cercanas a la muerte y, por ello, puede «ver» ciertas cosas. Theodora o «Theo» Crain, la hermana mediana, es psicóloga y vive en casa de Shirley, cobra también los derechos de autor de uno de los libros de su hermano Steven sobre Hill House, es la que tiene sensaciones muy intensas al tocar cualquier cosa con sus manos o a cualquier persona, sabe que siente, qué le ha pasado o el objeto que sujeta a quién pertenece. Por último tenemos a los gemelos Luke Crain y Eleanor «Nell Crain. Él es un drogadicto que pasa la mayor parte de su adultez tratando de desintoxicarse, es de los que más experiencias sobrenaturales ha tenido junto a Nell, la cual, desde muy pequeña ha visto a un fantasma al que ella llama «la mujer del cuello torcido» que, más adelante, se desvela quién es y te quedas sorprendida de verdad. Ambos tienen una unión muy fuerte entre gemelos.
Hill House fue la casa de la infancia de los cinco niños, donde sus padres les llevaron para arreglarla y más tarde venderla por una cantidad bastante grande de dinero para poder construir la suya propia y dejar de trabajar. Durante el día, la casa está en silencio pero, durante la noche, todos los fantasmas que allí residían desde hacía mucho tiempo, empiezan a aterrorizar tanto a los niños como a la madre de los mismos, la cual, empieza a enloquecer, a perder la conciencia de lo que hace y a tener migrañas intensas, cosa que deja de pasar si se aleja de la casa. Durante la serie, podemos ver los distintos «flashbacks» que tienen los hermanos cuando eran niños y vivían en Hill House, lo hace de una forma fácil y con buen ritmo, sabiendo que cada uno de ellos tuvo una experiencia distinta y engloba la personalidad de los hermanos de una manera única y muy interesante, he de decir que esto es lo que más me gustó y me enganchó de la serie.
También conocemos a Hugh Crain, el padre de los cinco hermanos. Tras los eventos en Hill House y el poder sacarlos de la casa, se mantiene alejado de ellos hasta que una noticia hace que vuelva a la ciudad y les vea siendo adultos y llevando sus vidas. Estuvo ausente y todos ellos se lo recuerdan cada día pero, una vez más, trata de protegerles de Hill House, la casa que se empeña en acercarlos nuevamente para liberarse de ellos. Se mantuvo cerrada durante años y, aún estando en ruinas, tiene el poder de atraer a los más débiles mediante sus anhelos, hacen que sus mentes flaqueen, les hipnotiza y les engaña para terminar siendo parte de su estómago. Esto va entendiéndose hacia el final de la serie pero te das cuenta de cómo las personalidades de estos cinco chicos ha cambiado radicalmente debido a lo que les ocurrió en aquella casa en su infancia.
Tiene una ambientación bastante oscura que me encanta, unos diálogos muy ajustado a lo que ocurre, engloba la vida de los personajes de una forma bastante clara y amplia, la sigues muy bien y el maquillaje es increíble. Hay muchas partes de la serie que te sorprenden mucho, otras que te dan miedo o te asustan pero son momentos separados, diría que no da miedo constantemente, definiría la serie como suspense y oscura, no a una que dé terror todo el rato. La «continuación» es «Haunting of Bly Manor», no tiene que ver con esta, pero tiene una orientación parecida y utilizan a la mayoría de los actores que salieron en esta pero protagonizando a otros personajes.

It is loosely based on Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel of the same name. The plot alternates between two timelines, after five adult siblings whose paranormal experiences at Hill House continue to pursue them today.
I was a little hesitant to watch this series because I knew it had to do with ghosts, some terror, suspense and there would be some scare moments, which I confirmed later. I’ve always avoided scary movies since I was a child and put them in the «I don’t like» group but I decided I didn’t want circumstances from my past to limit my present, as was happening with everything to do with terror or fear, so I decided to start with this series. We could say it’s soft on some things but the scares ones are really weird, sometimes things come out where you don’t expect and obviously, you startle. It scared me? Sometimes it did, but I preferred to focus a lot more on the story that unraveled these kids from a young age to adulthood.
First, we meet Steven Crain (big brother), the young writer who talks about other people’s supernatural stories because he is cynical about this subject, although we will see this change as the series progresses. Then we have the other older sister Shirley Crain, who, working in a funeral home with her husband and has two children, has had many experiences close to death and can therefore «see» certain things. Theodora or «Theo» Crain, the middle sister, is a psychologist and lives at Shirley’s house, also earned money from the author rights from one of her brother books about Hill House, which has very intense sensations when touching anything with her hands or anyone, knows what he/she feels, what has happened to her/him or the object she holds to who she belongs to. Finally we have the twins Luke Crain and Eleanor «Nell» Crain. He is a drug addict who spends most of his adulthood trying to detox, is one of those who has had the most supernatural experiences as well as Nell, who, from a very young age, has seen a ghost whom she calls «the woman with the crooked neck» who later, reveals who she is and you can be truly surprised. Both have a very strong bond between them.
Hill House was the childhood home of the five children, where their parents took them to fix it and later sell it for a fairly large amount of money so they could build their own home and stop working. During the day, the house is silent but, during the night, all the ghosts that have lived there for a long time, begin to terrorize both the children and their mother, which begins to go crazy losing consciousness of what it does and to have intense migraines, which ceases to happen if she leaves the house. During the series, we can see the different «flashbacks» that the brothers have when they were children and lived in Hill House, it does so in an easy way and with good rhythm, knowing that each of them had a different experience and encompasses the personality of the brothers in a unique and very interesting way, I have to say that this is what I liked the most and hooked me from the beginning.
We also know Hugh Crain, the father of the five brothers. After the events at Hill House and being able to get them out of the house, he stays away from them until a news story brings them back to town and sees them being adults and leading their lives. He was absent and they all remind him that every day but, once again, he tries to protect them from Hill House, the same one that strives to bring them back to free itself from them. It remained closed for years and, even when in ruins, has the power to attract the weakest through their longings, cause their minds to falter, mesmerize them and deceive them into ending up being part of its stomach. This is being understood towards the end of the series but you realize how the personalities of these five brothers have changed radically because of what happened to them in that house in their childhood.
It has a rather dark atmosphere that I loved it, the dialogue was very tight to what happens, encompasses the life of the characters in a rather clear and wide way, you follow it very well and the makeup is amazing. There are many parts of the series that surprise you very much, others that scare you but are separate moments, I would say that it is not constantly scary, I would define the series as suspense and dark, not one that gives terror all the time. The «continuation» is «Haunting of Bly Manor», it has nothing to do with this one, but it has a similar orientation and use most of the actors who came out in this but starring in other characters.
